I was sitting at lunch the other day, watching the Women’s World Cup soccer match between USA and France when I heard a guy at the table next to me begin commenting on the sport as a whole. He and his friend made several comments about the pace, how boring it was and other things that made me realize they were not soccer fans. This is not surprising in this country. But one thing he said stood out to me. “I know that there are rules and lots of strategy behind the game, but to me it just seems like a free-for-all.”

They went on and ate their lunch and we even struck up a bit of a conversation about soccer, rules and how confusing a sport can be if you don’t understand those rules. They left and I finished watching the game. (We won 3-1, Go USA!)

But the comment he made still stuck with me. And it got me thinking, how does my life look to other people. Is it obvious to those who don’t know me very well that there is strategy behind it? Does it seem a free-for all?

This past weekend I went on a trip to Orlando. On the way down there, I had a 2 hour or so layover and thought that I might look at iTunes on my iPad and see if I wanted to rent a movie for the second leg of my journey. I proceeded to select the HD version of Tron: Legacy. I understood that this would be bigger than an SD version. But I thought, I’ve got the room, why not. However, iTunes didn’t tell me anywhere exactly how big this file was until it started to download. 4 gigs! I know that HD files are bigger, and I’m no stranger to large file sizes, however given that I was downloading this on my iPad on airport WiFi, I wish I had known before hand how big the file was.

This frustration was exacerbated by the fact that I was then told that I couldn’t download this file anywhere but on my iPad nor could I watch it on any other device. Had I known that, I would have rented on my laptop and then moved it to my iPad. So it’s Wednesday morning, and I’m still downloading the file to my iPad. Thankfully, I have 30 days to watch, but this is a little ridiculous.

I awoke in a panic to the sound of A.R. Rahman’s “O…saya” coming from my phone. It was my dad and he was on his way to pick me up for my 7:30am flight. It was 5:30am and I had yet to finish packing.

As I rushed toward the shower, the events of the early morning hours started to come back to me. After arriving home from an evening out with my mother I had intended to do one final load of laundry (essentials only) before packing and getting into bed…hopefully before 1:30am. This goal was frustrated by the total un-cooperation by the clothes dryer to actually get my clothes to some semblance of dry.

At 3am I gave up. Realizing that I should get at least some sleep, I set the dryer to it’s longest time setting and set every alarm I had for 5am. Confident that I could indeed arise at the appointed hour, I lay down for a short respite.

After the mad dash to make myself somewhat presentable (and thankful I had thought to lay out my clothes before bed) I received another call alerting me to the fact that my ride was in the driveway. With apologies for my unreadiness, I headed to the dryer, praying my clothes were indeed dry. A rush of relief as I pulled them out to discover they were perfect.

After a brief rest, though no sleep, in the car, we arrive at the airport a full 45 min before my flight. I was home free…until I spied the check-in line. It seemed as though the entire world was flying Southwest out of OKC.

But my fears were allayed as the line moved along at a brisk pace and before I knew it, I was in line at security and soon after at my gate with enough time to pick up a quick breakfast, board and relax as I began my journey.
